Impact of WWI
3 things
- decline in deference
- decline in the upper class
- increase in equality
Decline in deference
working/middle class even during the war.
high death toll shook confidence of upper class generals who led them.
Decline in the upper class
1914 alone 6 peers, 16 baronets, 261 aristocrats lost their lives.
Lots had to pay death duties, and sold their land and stately homes to pay for this
Increase in equality
People could vote after 1918. People had more affluent lifestyles than their parents.
Class and social values during 1918-1939: (still)
still lots of social barriers and conventions.

open revolt
working class attitudes
had changed.
- class conflicts were rare, strikes were in decline
- the depression undermined working class solidarity
