2.Co-evolution Flashcards
What is co-evolution?
Co-evolution is the process by which two or more species evolve in response to selection pressures imposed by each other.
What is an example of co-evolution?
parasaite and host
What happens in co-evolution?
A change in the traits of one species acts as a selection pressure on the other species
What is symbiosis?
Co-evolved intimate relationships between members of two different species
What is mutualism?
Both organisms in the interaction are interdependent on each other for resources or other services. As both organisms gain from the relationship, the interaction is +/+
What is an example of mutalism?
Algae and fungus. Algae receives minerals from fungus and fungus receives sugars from algal photosynthesis.
What is commensalism?
When only one of the organism benefit.
What is an example of commensalism?
Remoras and sharks
What is parasitism?
The parasite benefits in terms of energy or nutrients and the host are harmed as a result of the loss of these resources.
What is an example of parasitsm?
Plasmodium and Humans cause malaria.
What does the red queen hypothesis state?
In a co-evolutionary relationship, a change in the trait of one species acts as a selection pressure on the other species e.g. parasite and host
What must both species in a co-evolutionary relatioship do to avoid extinction?
Both organisms must adapt (evolve) to avoid extinction.
What happens that enables an organism to evolve?
Mutations provide the raw materials for evolution
