1.Health and safety Flashcards
What are the hazards is involved with fieldwork?
Adverse weather, conditions, difficult terrain, problems associated with isolation and contact with harmful organisms
How should sampling be carried out?
Sampling should be carried out in a manner that minimises impact on wild species and habitats.
What consideration must be given when sampling?
Consideration must be given to rare and vulnerable species in a habitat which are protected by legislation.
What is point count sampling?
This involves the observer recording all individual seen from a fixed point count location. This can be compared to other point count locations or with data from which the same location gathered at other times.
What are quadrats or transects?
For sessile (can’t move) and slow, moving organisms. Quadrats should be a suitable size and shape.
What are capture techniques?
They are for mobile species, e.g. fall, traps and nests
What are camera traps?
Camera traps are for elusive species - for animals, which are difficult to capture and where you want to avoid contact.
What is scat sampling?
For elusive species - can provide information such as number, range, DNA sampling, diet and health
What is a line transect?
A line transect is carried out by on rolling the transect, along the gradient. All the species present on the line are recorded.
What is a belt transect?
Two lines are used and all the species that are present in between both lines are recorded.
