29. Ribosomes Flashcards

Q

Ribosomes
What kind of particles are ribosomes? What does does it contain? Does it have subunits? What does the small subunit do? What does the large subunit do? Where is the ribosome in eukaryotes synthesised? What are free ribosomes? What are bound ribosomes?

What’s the ribosomes main function? What is the process called? What happens in that process? What does it form? What shape is it?

A

Ribosomes are small electron dense particles. It contains about 65% RNA and about 35% ribonucleoproteins. It has a small and large subunit. The small subunit reads the RNA and the large subunit connects amino acid to form a polypeptide chain. In eukaryotic cells the ribosomes are synthesised in the nucleolus. Free ribosomes synthesise proteins to be used within the cell. Bound ribosomes synthesise proteins that are secreted and used outside of the cell.

The ribosomes main function is to synthesise proteins in a process called translation. In translation a strand or mRNA is read and the right amino acids are connected together to form a long polypeptide chain.
