22. Lysosomes Flashcards

1
Q

What are lysosomes involved in?

Structure
How are they shaped? How many hydrolytic enzymes does it have? What is it’s ph level? Is it membranous?

A

Lysosomes are involved in intracellular digestion of foreign substances and organelles.

It’s shape is spherical. It has more than 40 hydrolytic enzymes. Is ph level is 5 which is favourable for enzymatic activity. Is has a single membrane.

Q

What are lysosomes divided into? What is a primary lysosome? What are secondary lysosomes? How is a secondary lysosome formed? What does it cause? What kind of bio molecules is it capable of digesting?

What are som types of secondary lysosomes?

What are lysosomes also involved in?

A

Lysosomes are divided in to primary and secondary lysosomes. Primary lysosomes are lysosomes fused with fine granulated material and contains inactive material. Secondary lysosomes are formed when primary lysosomes are fused with phagosomes or pinosomes. It causes inactive enzymes to be activated. It is capable of digesting bio molecules such as lipids, nucleic acids and others.

Some types of secondary lysosomes are: heterolysomes, autophagosomes, pinocytotic vesicles and multivesicular bodies.

Lysosomes are also involved in: controlled digestion of damaged organelles within a cell. Autolysis. Autophagic cell death(programmed self destruction).
