2.80 Homeostasis Flashcards
What physiological factors are controlled by homeostasis?
-Core body temp
-metabolic waste
-blood pH
-Blood glucose concentration
-Water potential of blood
-Concentration of oxygen and carbon dioxide in blood
What is homeostasis?
The control and regulation of all internal conditions of a cell or organism
What is the ideal body temp for humans?
37.0 Degrees celcius
How does the brain detect the body temperature?
By the thermoregulatory center in the base of the brain as blood passes through it
How can water be reabsorbed if the body detects low water levels in the blood?
-Either a large concentration of urine will be produced or a small amount
-A hormone called ADH controls this, secreted by the pituitary gland
What is the process of the control systems to send out a coordinated response?
-A stimulus
-A receptor that detetcts the stimuli
-A coordination center
-An effector (muscle or gland)
