2.2 Cell structures Flashcards
What is the function of the nucleus?
-Contains genetic material in chromosomes which control how the cell grows and works
- Controls cell division
What is the function of Cytoplasm?
-Supports cell structure
- Site of many chemical reactions
- Contains water and different solutes
What is the function of the Cell membrane?
-Holds the cell together
- Controls substances going in or out of the cell
What is the function of the cell wall?
-Gives the cell extra support and defines its shape
What is the function of Chloroplasts?
-Site of photosynthesis, giving plants food
-The chlorophyll pigments inside the chloroplasts absorb the light energy needed for photosynthesis
What is the function of the Vacuole?
-Contains cell sap
-Used for storage of certain material
-Helps support the shape of the cell
What is the function of the mitochondria?
-Site of aerobic respiration, providing energy for the cell
-Cells with higher metabolism will have more mitochondria
What is the function of ribosomes?
-Site of protein production in protein synthesis
