2.67 Coronary Heart Disease Flashcards
What do the coronary arteries do?
They are blood vessels that provide the cardiac muscle with oxygen and glucose
What leads to coronary heart disease?
Layers of fatty material (plaque) build inside the coronary artery, narrowing the artery and making its walls less elastic. A complete blockage will lead to a heart attack and a partial one will lead to chest pains
What are 2 sources of cholesterol?
-Dietary cholesterol from animal products
-Cholesterol synthesized by the liver
What factors can lead to an increased chance of coronary heart disease in a human? Explain
-Obesity, Puts more stress on the heart
-High blood pressure, increased force of blood which could damage the artery
-High cholesterol, LDL Cholesterol leads to blocked arteries
-Smoking, causes plaque build up in arteries
