2.29 Role of digestive enzymes Flashcards
What are carbohydrases? Which are the 2 main ones?
Carbohydrases are enzymes that break down carbohydrates into simple sugars
- The 2 main ones are amylase and maltase
What is amylase?
It is a carbohydrase that breaks down starch into maltose, Amylase is made in the salivary glands, the pancreas, and the small intestine.
What is maltase?
A carbohydrase that breaks down maltose into glucose. Made in the intestines
What are proteases? Which are the 2 main ones?
Proteases are groups of enzymes that breaks down proteins into amino acids
-The 2 main ones are Pepsin and protease
What is pepsin?
An ezyme made in the stomach which breaks down proteins into smaller polypeptide chains
What is protease?
An enzyme made in the pancreas and small intestine which breaks down polypeptide chains into amino acids
What are Lipase enzymes?
Lipases break down lipids into glycerol and fatty acids
What is lipase?
An enzyme produced in the pancreas and secreted into the small intestine which breaks down lipids into 1 glycerol and 3 fatty acid chains
