27 Drug Delivery of CV Flashcards
What cardiovascular conditions do i need to know
angina arrhythmias heart failure hypertension lipid regulation myocardial infarction pericarditis peripheral artery disease stroke
the type of formulation chosen depends on two factors when producing a delivery strategy for cv drugs
onset of action needed
nature of the disease
describe the delivery using the paternal route
drug is directly introduced into the blood meaning a fast onset and bypasses the first pass metabolism
can be given via bolus or infusion intramuscular or subcutaneous
describe the delivery using the sublingual route
drug is taken under the drug as it passes through the thin mucosa of the sublingual region as it is rich blood supply
it has a fast onset however it is not often suitable for all drugs
what properties should a drug that is to be used sublingually have
drug should be potent
water soluble
relatively small molecular weight
describe the delivery using the transdermal route
sustained release of the drug
compliance and less eratic absorption
onset of action is not critical
describe the structure of a patch
impermeable tan coloured backing film
drug reservoir
semi permeable release membrane that controls the release to the skin
layer of silicone adhesive
a white to off white coloured protective liner which is removed prior to usse
describe the delivery using the oral route
reserved for chronic stable conditions
same absorption conditions
onset of action is not critical
opportunity to modify the drug release
