2.6 OMT for Pulm Flashcards
What are the benefits of performing the rib raising technique?
Inhibits soft tissue, massages and relaxes the sympathetic ganglia on the rib heads, returns normal tone for venous and lymphatic return
Rib raising would fit into which kind of OMT model?
Neurologic-Autonomic model, affecting sympathetics
Diaphragmatic function would relate to which functional OMT model and an example of how?
Respiratory-circulatory model; Diaphragm pushes/pulls the lungs/abd viscera which affects lymphatic drainage
Chest cage mechanics are a part of what model and what is the goal when treating the chest cage mechanics?
Biomechanical model; Goal is to increase compliance in the chest cage and reduce the work and energy required for motion
How does finding tightness in the shoulder girdle relate to decreased compliance in the chest cage?
Patient is needing to work harder to breath and is using their accessory muscles of respiration which is leading to tightness
How does an obstruction when breathing influence the metabolic model?
Requirement for more work in order to breath; Need more energy
You have a patient that has slight difficulty breathing. You do a screening and find somatic dysfunction at C4. You treat it and the patient felt like he could breath better. What did you do?
C3-5 is the root of the phrenic nerve which innervates the diaphragm.
What is the sympathetic innervation for the lungs?
T2-T4
Barrel shaped chest is indicative of what kind of problem?
COPD
