Formal Training
Official, structured training that may be job specific or related to gaining a qualification. Often referred to as “Off-the-job” as time is taken away from their day to day activities

Disadvantages of Formal Training
Expensive for business
Time consuming
Reduces productivity as employees are not working
Informal Training
Less structured training that occurs on the job. Informal training is often carried out by colleagues
Advantages of informal training
Less time consuming and expensive than formal training
Disadvantages of informal training
Difficult for trainee as wont have all skills needed for the job
Could make costly mistakes on the job
Self Learning
An employee teaching themselves a skill or part of the job role
Advantages of self learning
Go at own pace
Free
Disadvantages of self learning
Less efficient
More likely to make mistakes
Requires motivation
Ongoing training
Training that is ongoing while an employee works for a business
Performance Reviews
discussion sessions between the employees and their boss about how well they are doing against the targets set for them
Induction training
Training given to an employee when they join an organisation

Helps an employee settle into their job role
