Four Ds?
Disturbance of thought, emotion, or behavior
Dysfunction of biologoical processes interefeeres with everyday functioning) tied to a person or society (holding a regular job or being productive)
Distress (or Disability) relates to discomfort, pain, or anguish of others in everyday life (especially relationships or work)
Deviant Thought, emotion, or behavior, but only if also dysfunctional; Different from social norms
Define:
Syndrome?
A set of related conditions, of clinically signficant disturbacnes of thoughts, feelings, or behaviors
Identify:
Abnormal Behavior?
Behavior that leads to disturbance of thoughts, is personally distressing, dysfunction, deviant that people judge it to be inappropriate and maladaptive
Define:
Comorbidity?
The presence of two or more disorders in an individual at the same time
Identify:
Depressive Disorder?
A chronic condition characterized by enduring changes in mood, motivation, and sense of self-worth
Identify:
Major Depressive Disorder?
Pervasive low mood, lack of motivation, lack of energy and feelings of sadness and guilt which lasts for at least 2 consecutive weeks
Distrubance
Feeling out of the ordinary
Distress:
Can lead to sh/suicide
Dysfunction:
No motivation
Deviant:
Normal people don’t feel like this
Identify:
Bipolar Disorder?
Hypomanic & Manic Episodes?
Mental Illness that causes unusal shifts in a person’s mood, energy, activity levels, and concentration
Disturbance:
Extreme Highs and Lows
Distress:
Acting differently due to mood swings
Dysfunction:
Lack of Social Skills at times
Deviant:
Normal people don’t feel like this
Manic (Bipolar I)
Increaased energy, sleeplessness, euphoria, irritability, delusions of grandeur, increase sex drive, and racing thoughts that last at least 1 week
Hypomanic (Bipolar II)
The same symptoms but shorter in duration (4 Days)
Define:
Learned helplessness?
The feeling of failure that results from repeated inability to control or escape from overwhelmingly stressful situations
Identify:
DIGFAST?
Bipolar Disorder
Symptoms of Mania
D- Distractability
I- Indiscretion
G- Grandiosity
F- Flight of ideas
A- Activity increased
S- Sleep (Decreased need for)
T- Talkativeness
Identify:
Generalized Anxiety Disorder?
A state of pervasive and excessive anxiety lasting at least 6 months
Disturbance:
Thinking about more things than necessary
Distress:
Worries yourself and others
Dysfunction:
Hyper focused on things
Deviant:
Normal people don’t worry that much
Identify:
Panic Disorder?
How long to classify?
Frequent panic attacks and pervasive fear, worry, embarassment, and concern about having future panic attacks (Each one about 10 min)
Panic Attacks involve sudden changes in body and mind, characterized by an overwhelming sense of impending doom, heart palpatations, trembling, sweating, shortness of breath, dizziness, intense dread, nausea, and even a fear of dying

Define:
Social anxiety disorder (Social Phobia)?
Pronounced fear of humiliation or embarassment in the presence of others or severe self-consciousness about one’s appearance, behavior, or both
Define:
Agoraphobia?
Intense anxiety, fear, and panic about being in places from which escape might be diffcult or in which help might not be available
Ex: If a panic attack occurs in open spaces, a public market, outside of home alone, or in enclosed spaces, the fear of being unable to escape people at home
Identify:
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)?
Obsession? Compulsion?
A disorder in which uncontrollable thoughts lead to repeated, unwanted behaviors
Obsession:
An unwanted thought, word, phrase, or image that intrusively, persistently and repeatedly comes into a person’s mind and causes distress
Compulsion:
A repetitive behavior performed in response to uncontrollable urges or according to a ritualistic set of rules in an attempt to reduce anxiety
Disturbance: Cannot move on until done with a compulsion
Distress: Constant discomfort from thoughts
Dysfunction: While driving or doing normal everyday things
Identify:
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)?
Flashbacks?
A trauma- and stressor-related disorder that involves a set of intrusive and persistent cognitive, emotional, and physiological symptoms triggered by exposure to a catastrophic or horrifying event
Flashbacks: Vivid reactions in which one feels as if they were experiencing the traumatic event all over again
*Does not have to be at the event to experience it
