Nasopharyngeal aspirates or swabs
What is the transport medium for the specimen of choice?
Calcium alginate and Dacron
NOTE: Throat swab can also be use for specimen collection

Amies with charcoal
1% Casein hydrolysate
Regan-Lowe transport medium
NOTE: Regan Lowe transport medium contains 10% horse blood and 40mg/L Cephalexin
What are the Agar media use?
Bordet-Gengou/Potato blood glycerol
Charcoal horse blood
Incubation?
Moist chamber at 35C > 7days
What is the microscopical morphology for Bordetella?
Tiny gram neg coccobacilli
Can also use Direct fluorescent antibody staining
What media is used to identify hemolytic for Bordetella?
Bordet gengou agar
What agar can give these characteristics?
Smooth, Glistening and silver, Resembing mercury droplets
Charcoal-horse blood and Regan Lowe media
How many days for the growth of B. pertussis in Charcoal Horse blood agar?
3-5 days
