2.1 body systems Flashcards
What is an organ?
A group of tissues
What is an organ system?
An organ system is one or more organs that perform specific functions
What is a tissue?
Tissue is cells of the same structure or function
What are the three characteristics of all systems?
- A system is made of individual parts that work together as a whole.
- a system is usually connected to one or more systems,
- if one part of a system is missing or damaged the system will not function well or may not function at all
What body system is this?

Circulatory System
What is the function of this system? (4 things to remember)

The circulatory system transports blood, nutrients, gasses and wastes around the body
What is this system?

Digestive System
What is the function of the digestive system? (4 things to remember)

The digestive system takes in food, breaks down food, absorbs nutrients and eliminates solid waste.
What is this system called?

Respiratory system
What does the respiratory system do?
The respiratory system controls breathing. Exchanges gases in the lungs and tissues.
What is this system?

Excretory System
What does the excretory system do?
The excretory system removes liquid and gas wastes from the body.
What is this system?

Immune system.
What does the immune system do?
The immune system defends the body against infections
What is this system?

Muscular system

What does the muscular system do?

The muscular system has mucles that work with the bones to move parts of the body.

What is this system?

Nervous system

What does the nervous system do?

The nervous system detects changes in the enviroment and signals those changes to the body, which then carries out a response.

What is this system?

Skeletal system

What does the skeletal system do? (three things)

The skeletal system supports, protects, and works with muscles to move parts of the body.

What is this system?

The integumentary system

What does the integumentary system do?
The integumentary system includes the skin, hair, and nails. It creates a waterproof protective barrier around the body.
What is this system?

The reproductive system.

What does the reproductive system do?

The reproductive system includes reproductive organs for producing offspring (babies).

What is this system?

The endocrine system

What does the the endocrine system do?

The endocrine system manufactures and releases hormones.

What are the eleven body systems?
- circulatory
- digestive
- respiratory
- excretory
- immune
- endocrine
- reproductive
- integumentary
- skeletal
- muscular
- nervous
What is the smallest part of a system?
A cell is the smallest part of a system
Explain this picture

A heart cell is the smallest part of the system. Heart cells make up the piece of cardiac (heart) tissue. Heat tissue makes up the organ – the heart. The heart is part of the organ system called the circulatory system. The circulatory system is part of the oganism called a human.

What are tissues
Tissues are cells of the same structure and function are grouped together.
What do groups of tissues form?
Groups of tissues form organs.
Where does the word tissue come from and what does it mean? Why is this word appropriate?
Tissue comes from Latin and means ‘to weave’.
This is appropriate because tissue is cells that are woven together by sticky materials or fibers that go between each cell.
What are the four types of tissue in the human body?
1, Muscle tissue
- Nerve tissue
- Connective tissue
- Epithelial tissue
What is muscle tissue?
muscle tissue, such as skeltal muscle tissue, assists in body movment. It also helps some organs carry out specific functions, such as the heart pumping blood.
What is nerve tissue?
Nerve tissue transfers signals in the body and its organs to tell the body how to respond to changes in its internal and external environments.
What is connective tissue?
Connective tissue holds together and supports other tissues, such as skeltal connective tissues.
Connective tissue connects, protects, and insulates organs.
What is Epithelial tissue?
Epithelial tissue covers the surface of ogans and the body. It also lines the inside of body parts, such as the mouth, esophagus, and the stomach.
What is tissue A?
A. is muscle tissue
Muscle tissue helps the bones move, and also helps organs like the heart to pump.
What is tissue B
B. is Nerve tissue.
Nerve tissue transfers signals in the body and organs to tell the body how to respond to its internal and external environments
What is tissue C?
C. is Connective tissue
Connective tissue holds together and supports other tissues, such as skeltal connective tissue. Connective tissue connects, protects, and insulates organs.
What is tissue D?
D. is Epithelial tissue
Epithelial tissue covers the surface of organs and the body. It also lines the indie of body parts, such as the mouth, esophagus, and the stomach
