1.1 microscope Flashcards
What does an eyepiece do?
it is used for viewing and contains a lens that magnifies
What does the arm do?
supports the eye piece
What does the coarse focus knob do?
Brings an object into focus at low or medium power
What does the fine focus knob do?
Brings an object into focus at high power
What does the objective lens do?
Magnifies the image. Most microscopes have three or four lenses
What does the revolving nose piece do?
Holds the three objective lenses
What does the stage do?
Supports the slide. Some microscopes have stage clips to hold the slide in place
What is a light source?
Supplies the light needed to view the slide
What is the base?
Supports the entire microscope.
What is the magnification of a low power lens?
4x
What is the magnification of a medium power objective lens?
10x
What is the magnification of a highpower objective lens?
40x
what does low-power objective lens X eyepiece lens =
total magnification of the microscope
How does a compound light microscope work?
two sets of lenses that work together to magnify and focus an image
When you look through a microscope, what do you notice about the image?
it is magnified, inverted and reversed
How should you carry a microscope?
One hand on the arm and one on the base
What type of microscope is used in science classes and medical laboratories?
Compound light microscope
What does a microscope do?
extends human vision to smaller than .1mm
What is resolving power?
The ability to distinguish between two dots or objects that are very close together
What is the resolving power of a compound light microscope?
0.2microns
How small is a micron?
millionth of a meter
How many creatures that are one micron big could fit on a meterstick length?
one million
