2.1 Flashcards
what do testes do
produce sperm in the seminiferous tubules and testosterone in the interstitial cells
what are and what do the seminiferous tubules do
they’re tiny tubes in testes containing germline cells which divide by meiosis to produce sperm cells
everything about interstitial cells
located in tissue between seminiferous tubules.
produce testosterone which passes into bloodstream
everything about testosterone
promotes sperm production in seminiferous tubules
stimulates prostrate gland and seminal vesicles to secrete fluid
everything about seminal vesicles and prostrate gland
secretes fluids that maintain the mobility and viability of the sperm
everything about ovaries
contain germline cells which divide by meiosis to produce eggs
contain immature ova at various stages of development
everything about follicle
surrounds and protects the developing egg
secrets the hormone oestrogen
what does the corpusluteum do
secretes the hormone progesterone
everything about the oviduct
site of fertilisation to produce a zygote
everything about uterus endometrium
site of implantation of a blastocyst which develops into an embryo
everything about cervix
opening of uterus which secretes cervical mucus, important in fertility
what happens during fertilisation
- mature ova are released into the oviduct where they may be fertilised by a sperm to form a zygote
- the haploid nuclei of sperm and egg fuse together to from a diploid zygote
stages of embryo formation
- the zygote divides repeatedly by mitosis (cleavage) to form a blastocyst
- the blastocyst continues along the oviduct and enters the uterus where it implants into the endometrium
- it then completes its develop into an embryo
what happens to the follicle following ovulation
develops into corpus luteum
