- Stalin initially favoured creation of Jewish state in Palestine but reverted once allegiance to USA was clear. Golda Meir (Israeli ambassador) arrived in 1948 –cheered by Soviet Jews and Stalin did not like how popular she had been

What was the Doctors’ Plot in 1951 and its outcome?
- Lydia Timashuk doctor in the Kremlin and MGB informer wrote to Stalin stating that doctors had failed to diagnose Zhdanov and other leaders. Stalin suggested that it was at the fault of Jews who had used their positions to harm the USSR.
- Stalin threatened the Head of State with execution if he did not get a confession. Thousands of Jews rounded up and deported to labour camps. The press helped to create an anti-Jewish hysteria. 9 doctors to be executed but Stalin died before this happened.
