Why did the Crimean War start in 1853?
The War started in 1853 as a result of Nicholas I’s attempt to increase Russian influence in the Ottoman Empire.
Who was involved and why?
Britain and France were involved in the interest of protecting their trade and defended Turkey and sent 60,000 men.
What happened to Nicholas I in 1855?
Nicholas I died in March 1855 and gave power to his Alexander II with the words ‘I hand over to you my command, unfortunately not in as good order as I would have wished’
When did the Crimean war end and what were the consequences?
The war ended in 1856 with the Treaty of Paris (Russia lost). The consequences of this was that there were to be no Russian warships in the Black sea
What inadequacies did the war expose? (5)
Outdated technology: Sail vs steel bottom clad and steam
Health: Cholera outbreak
Lack of equipment: 1 gun:2 people
Conscripted serf army: Serfs were at war so couldn’t tend to crops
Leadership: Authority given to those with money not the experienced
