2019. Rosenbaum And Dan. The Continuing Evolution Of CP Flashcards
What is the 2007 definition of Cerebral Palsy?
Cerebral palsy (CP) describes a group of permanent disorders of the development of movement and posture, causing activity limitation, that are attributed to nonprogressive disturbances that occurred in the developing fetal or infant brain.
The motor disorders of cerebral palsy are often accompanied by disturbances of sensation, perception, cognition, communication, and behaviour, by epilepsy, and by secondary musculoskeletal problems
What is significant about the 2007 definition of CP? What are these specific things?
(Rosenbaum + Dan 2019)
The second sentence recognised for the first time the co-existence of many functional impairements experienced by people with CP
Disturbances of sensation, perception, cognition, communication, and behaviour, by epilepsy, and by secondary musculoskeletal problems.
Is CP ‘just’ a motor impairment syndrome?
Rosenbaum + Dan 2019
No, now considered a neurological impairment and the 2007 definition recognises this
The neurological impairment of CP can be both what?
- As a function fo the primary disturbance to which CP is attributed
- A secondary consequence of activity limitations
What three considerations do Rosenbaum and Dan propose to consider for the definition of CP, rather than a new definition?
(2019)
- CP is a developmental condition - affect developmental trajectory
- therefore interventions need to promote development and function - CP is lifelong and must be addressed through the lends of life-course perspective
- An integrative framework offers an important contrast
