What was the goal of the Union in the West?
Control of the Mississippi river, and the smaller rivers that fed it.
Habeas Corpus-
a legal writ, or order, that guarantees a prisoner the right to be heard in court. Lincoln suspended this to deal with war opponents.
Rose O’Neal Greenhow-
was a woman spy for the south. Entertained Union leaders in Washington D.C. then sent the information she got from them to the south.
Clara Barton-
was a northerner who got famous for her work with wounded soldiers. Started the red cross.
Battle of New Orleans-
David Faragut captured New Orleans, the largest city in the south. The Capture of New Orleans meant the south could not use the Mississippi any more.
What was the Monitor-
an ironclad that the north owned, in the Virginia Sea Battle there was no winner. But both north and south spirits rose.
What is the Merrimack-
A broken ship that was abandoned by the Union. The Confederacy took it and repaired it to better than its original state and made it an ironclad. The confederacy named it the Virginia.
What was the Virginia Sea Battle-
took place on March 8 in 1862 when the Virginia attacked Union ships in Chesapeake bay, on march 9 the Virginia and the Monitor met and fought, neither ships won
What are Copperheads-
criticized Peace Democrats, named after a deadly snake by the war Democrats. Wore copper pennies to embrace the name
What are Greenbacks-
when the war was over they had to pay for the war. They could get a loan, make new taxes, and print money. The money the north printed was named greenbacks because their colors
Who was Ulysses Grant-
A union general who demanded an unconditional surrender at Fort Donelson. He became known as “Unconditional Surrender” Grant.
What was the Military draft-
a system of selecting people for required military service.
What were the Military draft riots (especially in New York City)
-in July of 1863, rioters protested against the military drafts. Government and military buildings were attacked. African Americans were attacked because people were scared their jobs would be taken. 100 people were dead after four days.
Battle of Shiloh-
in the battle of Shiloh there were 23,000 casualties and the Union won.
Battle of Bull Run-
It was near a river called Bull Run. The Union retreated and the Confederates won. People came out with picnic blankets and food to watch the battle, little did they know it was way more gruesome than they thought.
