American Colonization Society
The American Colonization Society was a group that would get donations and buy slaves then send them to Africa.
William Lloyd Garrison
Massachusetts abolitionist who started a newspaper called The Liberator. Called for an immediate end for slavery rather than a slow one. Was attacked and was jailed in order to be protected.
Grimke Sisters
Sarah and Angelina Grimke were two early Abolitionists born into a wealthy slave holding family.
Underground Railroad
It was a network of secret routes and safe houses to escape to the free states of the North. The escaping slaves were called “passengers” and the people who helped them escape were called “conductors.”
Opposition to Abolitionism
A movement against Abolitionism mostly made up of white southerners.

The movement towards the end of slavery in the 1800s.
Elijah Lovejoy
Had an antislavery newspaper, angry mobs attacked his offices four times. The fourth time, they set fire to the building, and when he came out, they shot and killed him.
Life for African Americans in the North before the Civil War
There was no slavery, but they were still not treated well. They were technically free, but still not equal.
Maria Mitchell
Maria Mitchell became the first female astronomer in 1847, and the first person to discover a comet with a telescope.

Lucretia Mott
She was an early feminist activist and she was a strong advocate for the right of freedom for slaves. She spoke out against racial and gender injustice.
Alcoholism (and divorce)
Indiana was one of the first states of many to allow divorce if their husbands were alcoholics. LOL!
