Britain and France need for Southern cotton
Britain and France relied heavily on cotton and so when the war started, the Confederacy tried to get them on their side.
Battle of Fort Sumter
Jefferson Davis ordered an attack on Fort Sumter, a Union fort on an island in South Carolina. Nobody died, but afterward Lincoln called for more troops and the Civil War began.
Lincolns Republican Party
Lincoln promised to stop slavery spread. First Republican Party president.
Slavery in the border states
the states were Missouri, Kentucky, West Virginia, Delaware, and Maryland. They were states that were in the Union as a Slave State.
States Rights-
Theory that individual states are independant and have the right to control their own affairs. (Ie business, taxes, elections etc.)
Rail line in the South
The American Civil War was the first in which large armies depended heavily on railroads to bring supplies. For the Confederate States Army, the system was fragile and was designed for short hauls of cotton to the nearest river or ocean port.

wanted to become an independent nation with slavery and be defensive
Slavery (how it effected the Democrat Party)
Slavery affected the democractic party by spliting it. This gave Abraham Lincoln a chance to gain the presidency.
1860 Presidential Election
Democratic party split, and the northern Democrats supported Stephen Douglas because of popular sovereignty. The Southern Democrats supported John C. Breckinridge to uphold slavery. Moderates from north and south made the Constitutional Union Party and chose John Bell, had no postion on slavery. The republicans chose Abraham Lincoln and wanted to stop the spread of slavery. Lincoln won by electoral votes even though he had 44% of the vote. Lincoln did not appear on the ballot in some southern states.

The average soldier was in the mid 20. Most of the soldiers were farmers before they enlisted.
