1860 Presidential Election

A

Democratic party split, and the northern Democrats supported Stephen Douglas because of popular sovereignty. The Southern Democrats supported John C. Breckinridge to uphold slavery. Moderates from north and south made the Constitutional Union Party and chose John Bell, had no postion on slavery. The republicans chose Abraham Lincoln and wanted to stop the spread of slavery. Lincoln won by electoral votes even though he had 44% of the vote. Lincoln did not appear on the ballot in some southern states.
