Workgroup
o Decentralized setup used in SOHO
o Uses local user accounts
o NO central server for computer / user management
o Simple to setup with no additional server software needed
o Computer right out the box is in workgroup
o Admin is done on that machine
Domain
o Centralized setup used in small or large businesses
o User accounts are managed on a central server called Domain Controllers
o Computer configuration & security settings are on a central server
o Need to setup server [Windows Server] more expensive
o One server can delete accounts if needed
o Have Domain = setup active directory on server
Active Directory
creates and manages users
Domain Controllers
admin group policies
How to Join Domain
o Right click start, system, about, system info, advanced system settings, change, domain [type in name]
—Have to setup DNS & DNS server set correctly
o ONLY Admin can join Domain
—Create account & give admin privileges
o Don’t create users on local box – create on Domain Controller
—Users’ login there
