1.4 Factors affecting enzyme activity Flashcards
1
Q
name the 4 factors that may affect enzyme activity
A
- temperature
- pH
- substrate concentration
- enzyme concentration
2
Q
what will occur in extreme temp
A
denature
3
Q
Effect of temp on enzyme controlled reactions:
A
- as temp increases, rate of reaction increases
- more kinetic energy = more successful collisions
- more enzyme substrate complexes formed
- past optimum temp, rate decreases
4
Q
why do enzymes denature due to high temp
A
- gain so much kinetic energy that tertiary structure bonds break
- looses 3D shape ∴ no successful collisions, ∴ no enzyme substrate complexes
5
Q
Effect of pH on enzyme controlled reactions
A
- as pH becomes more acidic, rate decreases
- more H+ present will disrupt active site
- as pH becomes more alkaline, rate decreases
- more OH- ions present will disrupt active site
6
Q
effect of increased substrate concentration
A
- increases substrate conc = increases rate
OR if all active sites are occupied rate stays constant
7
Q
effect of increased enzyme concentration
A
- increasing enzyme conc = increase rate OR if all substrate molecules are occupying active sites, rate stays constant
