What is cirrhosis?
Final stage of chronic inflammation of the liver - normal tissue has been killed and replaced by fibrotic tissue and nodular areas
What is the cause of cirrhosis?
Toxin, ETOH, other diseases
What are signs and symptoms of cirrhosis?
Fatigue, weight loss, jaundice, easily bruising or bleeding
How is cirrhosis diagnosed?
Symptoms, history, blood work
What are interventions for cirrhosis?
Stop drinking, meds to maintain function, transplant
What is the prognosis of cirrhosis?
6 months or less once at end stage
What is Ascites?
Fluid accumulation in the abdomen
What is the cause of Ascites?
Live cirrhosis, CHF, kidney issues, infection, nutrition, Cushing’s
What is Cholelithiasis?
Gallstones - stones form in bladder due to salts or cholesterol
What is cholecystectomy?
Gallbladder removal
What is nephritis?
Kidney infection, acute or chronic
What is the cause of nephritis?
Usually UTI that migrates up
What can chronic nephritis lead to?
Kidney fibrosis
What are signs and symptoms of nephritis?
Abrupt pain, fever, chills, malaise
Where will pain be located with nephritis?
On flank, low back over kidneys
How is nephritis diagnosed?
Blood work and urinalysis
How i nephritis treated?
Antibiotics
How do you test for nephritis?
McMurray percussion test
What is CKD and ESRD?
- Chronic Kidney Disease
- End Stage Kidney Disease
Is ESRD terminal?
No
What is ERDS?
Decreased kidney function, markers of kidney damage
What are the leading causes of ESRD?
DM, HTN, glomerulonephritis, med toxicity
What are signs and symptoms of ESRD?
Gradual - HTN, anemia, blood in urine, pallor, fatigue
How is ESRD diagnosed?
Increased BUN and creatinine
Describe hemodialysis parameters
3x/week, 4 hrs each
Describe peritoneal dialysis
4x/day - can be done at home with cath
What is acute cystitis?
UTI - bacterial infection in urethra
What are signs and symptoms of UTI?
- Frequent urination and urgency
- Pain with urination
- Fever, chills
- Blood in urine
- Mental confusion
What is the treatment for UTI?
Antibiotic
