10A: Endocrine DM Flashcards
What is the role of insulin in the body?
- Brings glucose into cells for metabolism
- Synthesis of glycogen, fat, and protein
What does insulin inhibit?
Liver production of glucose and increased cellular uptake of glucose
What is IDDM?
Type I - insulin dependent diabetes
When is the typical onset of Type I Diabetes?
Children
What is Type I DM?
Pt produces no insulin
What is NIDDM?
Non Insulin Dependent Diabetes
When is the onset of Type II DM?
Secondary to obesity, heredity, sedentary lifestyle
What is Type II DM?
Not enough insulin is produced or the receptors are not functioning properly
What are three consequences of DM?
- Hypo/hyperglycemia
- Diabetic ketoacidosis
- Retinopathy
What is retinopathy?
Decreased circulation in blood vessels of the eye that can lead to macular degeneration
What is nephropathy?
Decreased circulation of blood vessels to the glomerulus of the kidney
What is the result of nephropahty?
Excessive protein secretion - leads to kidney disease and requires dialysis
What is neuropathy?
Numbness, tingling, loss of peripheral sensation due to DM
What are foot problems associated with DM?
Charcot’s foot, open wounds that are slow to heal, other circulatory or anatomical changes
What % of non-traumatic limb amputation is due to DM?
> 60%
