1.2 Vocab Flashcards
the study of how the physical environment caused human activities
Geography
is designed to capture, store, manipulate, analyze, and present numerous types of spatial
GIS - Geographic information system
A system that uses data from satellites to pin-point a location on earth and help people find their way to a destination.
GPS stands for Geographic Positioning System.
the interaction between two places can be determined by the product of the population of both places, divided by the square of their distance from one another
Gravity Model
The spread of an idea from persons or nodes of authority or power to other persons or places
Think: Celebrity Starting a fashion trend and it slowly becoming a trend in the US
Hierarchical Diffusion
The region from which innovative ideas originate
Hearth
a branch of geography that focuses on the study of patterns and processes that shape human interaction with the built environment, with particular reference to the causes and consequences of the spatial distribution of human activity on the Earth’s surface.
human geography
An arc that for the most part follows 180° longitude, although it deviates in several places to avoid dividing land areas.
International Date Line
The numbering system used to indicate the location of a parallel, runs up and down, north to south.
latitude
the geographical situation of people and things.
location
The numbering system used to indicate the location of meridians drawn on a globe and measuring distance east and west of the prime meridian
Longitude
Think: East to West
a symbolic representation of selected characteristics of a place, usually drawn on a flat surface.
Map
an approach to dividing and creating boundaries at the mid-point between two places
Median Line Principle
Combining your objective knowledge of places and subjective perceptions
Mental Map
a map projection that fairly accurately shows shape and direction, but distorts distance and size of land masses
Mercator Projection
An arc drawn between the north and south poles and helps to define time zones along with parallels.
Meridan
A circle drawn around the globe parallel to the equator and at right angles to meridians and helps to define a time zone along with a meridian
parrellel
The geometric or regular arrangement of something in a study area.
pattern
An area defined by subjective perceptions that reflect the feelings & images about key place characteristics
Perceptual Region`
cylindrical projection that maintains accurate sizes of the world’s landmasses
Peters Projection
The theory that the physical environment may set limits on human actions, but people have the ability to adjust to the physical environment and choose a course of action from many alternatives.
Possibilism
The meridian, designed as 0 degrees longitude, that passes through the Royal Observatory at Greenwich, England
Prime Meridian
the process which the 3-D surface of Earth is transferred onto a 2D map.
or
A way of representing the spherical Earth on a flat surface
Projection
thematic maps in which the size or number of a chosen symbol indicates the relative magnitude of some statistical value for a given geographic region.
Proportional Symbol
