Where are fungiform papillae found and what do they respond to?
Found all over the tongue but concentrated at the tip; mainly respond to sweet and salty but also sour.
What are the five types of taste?
Sweet- glucose Sour- citric or hydrochloric acid Bitter- quinine hydrochloride Salty- NaCl Umami- glutamate (MSG)
Where are foliate papillae found and what type of taste do they respond to?
Most abundant on middle edges of the tongue and respond to sour.
What type of stimuli do the circumvallate papillae respond to and where are they found?
Largest and least numerous. Found at the back of the tongue in an inverted V and respond mostly to bitter stimuli.
What cranial nerves innervate each type of taste bud?
Fungiform and some foliate are innervated by CN VII (anterior 2/3)
Circumvallate and some foliate are innervated by CN IX (posterior 1/3)
What cranial nerve innervates the taste buds of the palate?
CN VII
What cranial nerve innervates the taste buds of the epiglottis?
CN X
