0610 - psychology and well-being - EG Flashcards
What is state-dependent memory?
Where information learnt at/in a particular state is only remembered in that state. For example information learnt while on benzodiazapines, is only remembered when on them.
What is psychodynamic theory?
abnormal mental state/behaviour caused by unresolved conflict/trauma in childhood which are repressed and result in anxiety. Can be treated by resolution of unconscious conflicts.
List some neurotransmitters that influence psychology and the diseases they are associated with.
(1) increased dopamine with schizophrenia - problems with thought, emotion, behaviour.(2) decreased serotonin with depression and antisocial behaviour.(3) decreased acetylcholine with alzheimers and learning and memory problems.
state 2 hormones that have an influence on psychology.
(1) decreased thyroid hormones and low energy levels associated with depression.(2) high adrenal gland hormones (cortisol) and associated anxiety and panic.
At what stage of life does schizophrenia tend to occur? Alzheimers?
schizophrenia in adolescence and early adulthood; Alzheimers in elderly.
What is behavioural theory?
that mental ambormality or abnormal behaviour is due to faulty learning and conditioning that can be treated by unlearning - exposure and response prevention.
What is diathesis-stress?
a predisposition to develop a mental illness is inherited and may or may not be triggered by environmental factors.
List various factors that impact psychological disorders.
genetics (diathesis stress); medical interventions (positive or negative impact); physical trauma (phantom limb, loss of brain); infection (syphilis); chemotherapy; panic disorder and sympathetic symptoms; imbalance of neurotransmitters; imbalance of hormones; age; contextual factors (social/cultural, medical, individual)
