What is a base?
A morpheme that gives a words its meaning
What is an affix?
A morpheme that attaches to a base morpheme
It cannot stand alone
Usually a prefix or suffix
What is an inflectional morpheme?
It changes tense, number, and/or degree
Can only be a suffix
Creates a change in the function of the word
(e.g., -s, -ed, -en, -ing, -er, -est, etc.)
What is a derivational morpheme
Changes either meaning of the word or its part of speech
Is often used to create new words
(un-, a-, -ly, etc.)
What is an allomorph?
Different pronunciations of the same morpheme
E.g., “-s” can sound like /s/, /z/, or /Iz/
What are homonyms?
Morphemes that are spelt the same but pronounced differently
E.g., “bear” can refer to either the animal or carrying something
What is a homophone?
Two morphemes that sound alike but have different meanings and spellings
(E.g., “bear” -VS- “bare”)
