Year 7 Work Flashcards
What is an organ system
A group of organs working together e.g circulatory system
What is a sperm duct
Connects to the urethra and carries sperm away from the testes
Female reproductive system
Produces egg cells (ova) place where the baby develops produces female sex hormones
Uses ovaries, uterus, vagina
What is a vagina
A muscular tube that opens to the outside of the body
Digestive system
Digests and absorbs food. Digested food is absorbed into blood stream.
Uses oesophagus, stomach, liver, intestines, pancreas
Respiratory system
To allow oxygen to enter the blood and carbon dioxide I’d leave forces air into and out of the lungs
Uses lung trachea nose
What is fertilisation
The nucleus of the egg and sperm fuse together to form a zygote
What is a large vacuole
Contains a weak solution of salts and sugars called sap when fibula, helps to support the cell
What are chloroplasts
Contains a green substance - chlorophyll. Absorbs Suns energy so the plant can make its own food by photosynthesis
What is cytoplasm
Where the chemical reactions take place
Circulatory system
Transport of oxygen, carbon dioxide foods wastes and hormones helps protect the body from invading microbes
What is an ovary
The ovaries produce the eggs and the female hormones
What is a guard cell
Plant cells that exist in pairs with a hole between. Plant cells with a thick inner wall and thin outer it controls the opening and closing of holes that allow carbon dioxide into leaves
Nervous system
Conducts messages from one part of the body to another coordinate and control the body
Uses brain, ear, nerves, eye, spinal cord
What is the function of the liver
To control blood sugar levels
What is the function of the kidney
To filter waste substances out of the blood
What is a penis
The penis must be erect for the sperm to pass through
What are testis
Produces sperm and testosterone
What is an organism
A whole living thing e.g a plant, an animal or a human
What are the 8 organ systems
Digestive Respiratory Circulatory Excretory Muscle-skeletal Nervous Male reproductive Female reproductive
What is a uterus
A muscular sac where the baby develops
What is a cervix
The ring of muscle that closes the vagina when it meets the uterus
What is a scrotum
A fluid that keeps the sperm alive. The sperm and liquid are called semen
What is a palisade cell
Leaf cells containing many chloroplasts and they are the main cells that absorb light for photosynthesis
What are the 4 ways of seed dispersal
Wind
Animal (eating)
Animal (on fur)
Self dispersal
Red blood cell
No nucleus contains a red pigment called haemoglobin disc shaped large surface. Carries oxygen around the body
What is an egg cell
A large round animal cell. Half a set of chromosomes in the nucleus. Contains a large amount of cytoplasm. It fuses with the sperm to start a new life
What is the function of the eye
Contains light receptors to see
What is the function of the stomach
Kills bacteria in food starts digestion of protein
What is the function of the nerve cell
Long extensions of cytoplasm surrounded by fatty cells. Carries messages called impulses around the body
Ciliated epithelial cell
Lining cells with a row of hairs along one edge. Create a current to move an egg cell or to move mucus in the respiratory system
What is implantation
The embryo settles into the uterus lining where it can start to grow and get food from the mothers blood
What is ejaculation
Sperm are releases at the top of the vagina
What is the equation for the magnification of a microscope
Magnification of eyepiece x magnification of object lens
What 3 things happen when a woman is about to give birth
The amniotic sac bursts
The muscles of the cervix relax and widen then dilate up to 10cm
Muscles in the uterus will start to contract to push the baby out
What fluid surrounds the baby
Amniotic fluid
What is cell membrane
It holds the cell together. It’s semi permeable. Controls what passes in and out
What is an organ
Groups of different tissues working together e.g a heart
What is a cell
The building blocks e.g a muscle cell
What is a tissue
Groups of similar cells e.g a muscle
What is a urethra
Joins to the sperm tube carries urine and semen out of the body though the penis
Name the 4 main organs of a plant
Petal, leaf, stem, root
What is ovulation
When an egg is released from an ovary
What is the function of the root
Anchors plant to the ground and absorbs water and minerals from the soil
What is the function of the stem
Hold leaves up to the light and transports substances around the plant
Male reproductive system
Produces sperm cells produces male sex hormone
Uses penis, testis
Recite Mrs gren
Movement - changing place or position
Respiration - releasing energy from food
Sensitivity - awareness of the surroundings
Growth - an increase in size or number
Reproduction - creating new individuals
Excretion - removal of waste products
Nutrition - obtaining food to build a body
What are the levels of organism
Cells-> tissue-> organ-> organ system-> organism
Musclo-skeletal system
Supports the body moves the body and protects soft parts of the body
Uses muscles, bones
Who invented the microscope
Anton van Leeuwenhoek
What is cell division
The embryos splits into 2, 4, 8,16 cells etc
What is pollination
The transfer of pollen from the anther of a flower to the stigma
What is the function of the ovaries
Produce eggs and female hormones
What is the function of the testes
Makes sperm and make male hormones
What is the function of the heart
Pumps blood around the body
What are the eight main organs of a human
Heart, liver, kidney, lungs, intestines, stomach, eyes, brain
What is the function of the brain
To control the body
What is the function of the lungs
To breathe in oxygen and out carbon dioxide
Sperm cell
Half a set of chromosomes in the nucleus. Has a tail. Package of chemicals in the head to penetrate the egg. It swims to an egg to fuse with it
What are the functions of the leaf
Absorbs light for photosynthesis and it makes food
What is the function of the flower
For reproduction it makes seeds
What is a nucleus
Controls the cell. It contains information to create a new living organism
What is an oviduct
It carries the eggs away from the ovary and towards the uterus
Excretory system
Removes waste from blood removes excess water from blood and produces and stores urine
Uses the kidney and bladder
Root hair cell
Plant cells that have no chloroplasts. Have long extensions at the side to give a large surface area. Absorbs water and minerals from the soil
What is a cell wall
Made of cellulose. Gives plant strength and support
