Don’t self treat xerosis
severe dry sking, large body surface area, intense itching, infected skin
Non-pharmacologic xerosis
-moisturizers(oil based emollients applied while skin is still damp after shower, 3 min)
-humidify air
-drink water
OTC xerosis
-moisturizer
-cleanser(not soap)
-hydrocortisone ointment/cream
follow up reccomendations for xerosis
1 week if not resolved
What causes atopic dermatitis
-genetics
-enviorment: diet, pollution, clothing, climate, stress
Symptoms of eczema
redness, scaling, face, neck, extremities, crusts(from scratching), lichenification, secondary infections
Do not self treat exzema
severe dry sking, large body surface area, intense itching, infected skin, less than 1 year old, on face or intertriginous areas(skin folds)
Non-pharmacologic eczema
avoid triggers, hydration, short finder nails)gloves at night if scratching), wet wrap compress, moisturizers, bleach bath(moderate to severe)
How to prepare a bleach bath
-2x daily, 3x per week
-1/2 cup bleach in full bathtub, soak for 10 minutes
-rinse with fresh water, pat dry, moisturize
Follow up eczema
-symptoms worsen or not improved after 1 week
-pruritis not improved after 1 week of hydrocortisone use
Bath oils for eczema
-contail mineral/vegtable oil+surfactant
-MOA: lubricate dry skin
-may be a saftey hazard
Cleansers for eczema
-contain glycerin, castor oil
-MOA: reduce skin drying
-little evidence
emollients
-fills spaces between desquamating skin scales with XXXX
-ex) glycol, glyceryl stearate
Occlusives
-prevent evaporation of water from the skin
-petrolatum, mineral oil, dimethicone
Humectants
-attract and hold water in the skin
-Glycerol, lactic acid, urea
