When should you not self treat cold?
tepm > 100.4, chest pain, shortness of breath, worsening symptoms, other health conditions, frail older adults, infants less than 3 months
What are non-pharmacologic treatment options for a cold?
hydrations, adequate rest, nutrious dies, increased humidification, aromatic oilds, nasal strips, disinfectant, zinc and vitamin c
zinc dosing
1 lozenge(13 mg) every 2 hours, target 75 mg/day
What are OTC treatment options for congestion?
saline nasal spray, decongestants, 1st gen. antihistamines
What are OTC treatment options for aches/pains?
systemic analgesics
What are OTC treatment options for pharyngitis?
saline gargle or local anesthetic spray/lozenge, systemic analgesics
What are OTC treatment options for sleeplessness caused by cold?
nasal decongestant spray AND 1st gen antihistamine, or alcohol containing product
What are the follow up reccomendations for cold?
follow up with PCP if: sore throat>several days or if fever, symptoms worsen during nonrx, temp higher that 101.5, chest congestion, wheezing, rash, earpain
pseudoehedrine dosing: adults, children > 12.
60 mg every 4-6 hours, max 240 mg
pseudoehedrine dosing: children 6- <12.
30 mg ever 4-6 hours, max 120 mg/day
side effects of antihistamines?
sedation, dry mouth/nose/throat, nausea, dizziness, difficult urination, constipation, blurred vision, cognitive prblems, excitation
What drugs interact with antihistamines?
dulozetine, alprazolam, MAOI, parkinson’s medications
what are the side effects of local anesthetics?
altered taste, nausea
What medications should older adults be wary of when treating their cold?
systemic decongestantst
What OTC should be used in young children?
avoid OTC id possible. Not reccomended i children <6 yrs
