Causes cavaties?
carbohydrates, oral bacteria, xerostonia, ortho appliences, meds, radiation, tobacco, alcohol, immune system dysregulation
When to not self treat cavaties?
toothachce, visual lesion, entire tooth discoloration, bleeding, swelling, reddened gums, persistant mouth odor despit regular of fluride toothpaste
Cause of gigivitis?
medications(calcium channel blocker, cyclosporine, phenytoin), reduced saliva flow, anticholegics, antidepressents, tobacco, pregnancy
not self treat gigivitis
swollen gums, bleeding with brushing, receding gums,
plaque removal
sugarless gum 20 minutes after meal, brushing and flossing(older than 5), toothbrush, dental floss at least once dail, irrigating device is supplemental
chemical plaque management
fluoride, dentrifices(toothpaste), mouthrinse
Toothpaste use
size of a pea, BID, soft brush change every 3-4 months, fluride containing, 45 degree angle
How should children brush?
start brushing when teeth erupt, fluoride toothpaste, rice grain(lesss than 3), supervise, parents education
sodium fluoride and sodium monoflurophosphate
remineralize, streghten weakened enamel, reduce gingivitis, reduce sensitivity
stannous fluride
normal protection + protective layer, but can have slight staining after 2-3 months, removed at professional cleaning
how to use mouthwash
1-2 tablespoons, 30 seconds then spit. Most effectve before brushing unless it has fluroide, avoid eating/drinking 30 minutes after
MOA of gum
increase salivia flow, mechanical removal of plaque, sugarless gum only
What is halitosis>
bad breath caused by volatile sulfur compounds(VSCs)
Prevention of halitosis
remove cause if possible, mouth hygiene, chemicals(zinc salts, chlorine dioxide
oral pain causes
exposure of dentin, injury to mouth or lips or with RAS, nerve pain
