Who shuld not self treat their muscle pain?
pain more than a 6, pain longer than 10 days, increased intensity, nausea/vommiting, fever/infection, visual deformity, OTC intolerances, achilles tendonitis, pregnancy, <2 years of age
What are non medication therapies?
stop etiology, stretching, massage, rest
When should ice be used?
early and often after injury, 3-4 times a day up to 72 hours
When should heat me used?
15-20 minutes, 3-4 times day after first 48 hours, non-inflammatory conditions only, don’t use with topical agents
What does RICE stand for?
rest, ice, compression, elevation
Describe compression tecniques?
start wrapping distal to injury, overlap wrap 1/3 to 1/2, decrease tightness closer to injury
How should systemic analgesic be taken with an injury?
initial: scheduled doses
Over 1-3 days: decreasing dose& increasing intervol
max 10 days
How should topical counterirritants used?
apply 3-4 times a day, max 7 days
