Woven definition
2 sets of yarn which is threaded at 90 degrees from on each other, the warp thread are fixed in the loom and run the length of the fabric, the weft threads run across the width of the fabric
Plain weave properties and uses
strong, hard wearing, retains shape, even surface on both sides, different yearns can create different hard wearing weave, tablecloths, upholstery, clothing
Non-woven fabric definition
made directly from the fibres without being spun into yarn
Boned fabric properties and uses
fabric lack strength, they lack grain so can be cut in any direction and do not fray, disposable hygienic clothing, cloths, teabags
Felted fabric properties and uses
can be formed with moisture and heat, once dry it has no elasticity and can be pulled apart, hats, handicrafts, protective pads
Weft knitting definition
single yarn that forms interlocking loops across the width of the fabric, stretchy but can lose its shape
Knitting definition
technique of interlocking yarn loops together to produce a fabric, used for jumpers, socks, tight and soft toys
Warp knitting definition
made by machine, forms interlocking vertical loops, less stretchy so holds it shape better
