Modification of Timber Flashcards
Methods of timber modification
chemical, thermal, impregnation
What is thermal timber modification
steaming the wood at high temperatures of 190 degrees leaving the wood with a 7% moisture level
Thermal timber modification advantages
strength - naturally seals the wood can’t be warped, durability, sustainable - lasts longer, free of chemicals, stability - won’t be harmed by water or rot
Thermal timber modification disadvantages
more expensive, becomes brittle - splitting or flaking, burn more quickly - low moisture
What is chemical timber modification
when chemicals are used to strengthen the timber
Chemical timber modification advantages
increase durability, strength
What is impregnation timber modification
the process in which pine is oaked in a bio-based liquid so the wood is imparted to make it stable, then it is heated
Impregnation timber modification advantages
wood cells are 50% thicker, stability, hardness, long life, no splinters, no chemicals, against rot
Impregnation timber modification disadvantages
some swelling
