Renewable energy Flashcards
Renewable energy stores
wind, wave , tidal, hydroelectric, geothermal, biomass, solar
Renewable energy stores are easily
replenishable and infinite
Wind power definition
turbines convert kinetic energy from the wind into electricity, the energy of the wind turns the blades on the rotor this is connected to a generator which creates electricity
Wind power advantages
cost effective, no CO2, sustainable
Wind power disadvantages
unpredictable, eye sore, high costs to transfer electricity from remote sites
Tidal power definition
movement of the water turns underwater turbines which drive the generators that convert it into electricity, tidal barrage systems make use of the difference between low and high tides,
Tidal power advantages
constant, predictable, no CO2
Tidal power disadvantages
expensive to set up and maintain
Solar panels definition
absorb light into photovoltaic cells which is converted into electricity
Solar panels advantages
no CO2, clean power
Solar panels disadvantages
dependant on the weather,
Biomass definition
the energy can be extracted from organic matter by burning or anaerobic digestion which creates biogas and a biofertilizer
Biomass advantages
large supply of material, carbon neutral
Biomass disadvantages
risk of deforestation
Hydroelectric power definition
a turbine converts falling water into energy and a generator turns it into electricity e.g. dams
