6 'R's' Flashcards
What are the 6 “R’s”
reuse, reduce, recycle, refuse, rethink, repair
Reduce definition
using less non-renewable resources, reducing: the amount and wastage of raw materials we use to manufacture products, the amount of energy used to transport products, the packaging we use to ‘contain’ products
Recycle definition
recycle as many materials as possible, as this reduces the amount of new materials required to manufacture the products we want
Reuse definition
we should reuse products or their components/parts when they are disassembled, at the end of their life cycles, products should be designed, so that they can be used again or at least their parts, with minimal reprocessing, which is cheaper and more environmentally friendly, than using new raw materials.
Refuse definition
refuse to buy something: if it is not environmentally
sustainable or it is not necessary, that is over packaged, with non-recyclable materials, that has not been manufactured from recycled/reclaimed materials.
Rethink definition
when designing, consider manufacturing the product from sustainable materials, do you really need the product, you are thinking of buying?, rethink your lifestyle
Repair definition
only design products that are repairable, not disposable. A repairable product will last much longer, buy products that can be repaired/maintained
