Metals Flashcards
Ferrous metal definition and properties
contain iron, have a high tensile strength, most are magnetic, vulnerable to rust if exposed to moisture - except stainless steel
Examples of ferrous metals
low carbon steel, high carbon steel, cast iron
Properties and uses of low carbon steel
tough and durable, rusts easily, car bodies, steel buildings, frames, pipelines
Properties and uses of high carbon steel
hard but brittle, hard wearing, resists abrasion, retains its shape, tools, blades, scissors
Properties and uses of cast iron
hard but brittle, resists deformation and rust, kitchen pans, machine bases, manhole covers
Non-ferrous metal definition and properties
pure metals that do not contain iron, non magnetic so can be used for wiring, higher resistance to rust but can corrode
Properties and uses of zinc
brittle, malleable, high corrosion resistance, used to galvanise steel
Properties and uses of copper
ductile, malleable, good electrical conductor, plumbing supplies, electrical cables
Properties and uses of tin
malleable, ductile, high corrosion resistance, good electrical conductor, solder, plating surfaces such as cans
Properties and uses of aluminium
lightweight, ductile, resists corrosion, bike frames, drink cans, takeaway trays
