MDF sources
waste timber is broken down into fibres and combined with a resin binder, pressed into strong dense sheets
Plywood sources
thin layers or veneers of wood glued together, each layer has it grain rotated 90 degrees so it is strong in all directions
Chipboard sources
wood chips or varying sizes are mixed with resin and pressed into a sheet
MDF properties and uses
rigid, stable, smooth, easy to finish surface, absorbent. good value, flat pack furniture, toys, kitchen units, internal construction
Plywood properties and uses
very stable in all directions. furniture, shelving, toys, construction - interior and exterior as marine grades have higher water resistance
Chipboard properties and uses
good compressive strength, not water resistant, good value but prone to chipping. flooring, low-end furniture, kitchen units, worktops
