What is done to wood before they’re sold
They’re season, air dried or kiln. Kiln seasoning is faster, yet typically used on indoor furniture whereas air seasoning is for outdoor furniture due to higher moisture content
What does seasoning give the wood
Greater decay immunity, increased stability, strength and rot resistance, less corrosive to metals
What is oak
Hardwood, tough, hard, weather resistant - furniture, flooring, joinery
What is ash
Hardwood, tough, has an attractive grain - tool handles, sports goods
What is mahogany
Hardwood, dark red colour - indoor furniture, veneers
What is teak
Hardwood, hard, tough, moisture resistant oils - outdoor furniture
What is birch
Hardwood, hard, straight grain - furniture, veneers
What is pine
Softwood, straight grain - construction work, timber frames
What is spruce
Softwood, straight grain - indoor furniture
What is larch
Softwood, hard, tough, attractive grain, moisture resistant - decking, garden furniture
What is cedar
Softwood, straight grain, moisture resistant - beehives, greenhouses, sheds
What is plywood
Manufactured board, Wooden sheets at pressed together at a 90 degree difference to have no grain weakness - desk tops, indoor furniture
What is aeroply
Manufactured board, plywood with higher quality timber, lightweight - jewellery items, laminated furnitue
What is flexible plywood
Manufactured board, bendable plywood - curved panels, laminated furniture
What is chipboard
Manufactured board, wooden chips glued together using UF - often veneered over, flat pack furniture
