Metal Finishes Flashcards
What are spray paints
Provide aesthetics, colour and a barrier against corrosion - used on low cost metals like steel
What is electroplating
Uses cheaper metals like silver, gold, zinc, copper and tin to provide a protective layer and to give a higher appeal - product and donor material are placed in a electrolyte solution a direct current is then applied, and the product attracts the donor metal and the product is electroplated
What is polymer dip coating
The product is dipped into a fine polymer powder, and the heat off the metal allows the polymer to melt around the product
What is metal dip coating
Metal product is dipped into a tank full of the molten plating metal - often used on inexpensive metals like low carbon steel to provide a corrosion barrier — tin
What is galvanising
Metal dip coating with zinc, used for beams, gates and pens, first protective layer in cad bodies
What is powder coating
Product is negatively charged , and then is sprayed using an air gun with a positively charged resin, then is placed in an oven, resulting in the finished product.
What is varnishing
Applied with a brush - used on aesthetically pleasing metals like aluminium, brass and copper
What is anodising
Used on aluminium products, enhances the natural oxide layers, increasing hardness and toughness, similar to electroplating, but an aluminium oxide layer builds up on the treated part instead, can be finished further with lacquer / varnish
What is catholic protection
Controls the rate of corrosion, Makes a metal the cathode of an electrochemical cell, the anode of the electrochemical shell is the donor metal that is more easily corrodable, anode corrodes while base metal stays protected
