1.1 - Materials And Their Applications Flashcards
What is compressive strength
The ability to withstand compressive forces
What is tensile strength and the material test for it
Ability to withstand forces pulling an object, apply material to a vice with a weight and observe the results
What is bending
Ability to withstand bending
What is torsional strength
The ability to withstand twisting forces
What is hardness and the material test for it
Ability to resist scratching, using the same force, hit the material with a hammer and observe the results
What is toughness and the material test for it
Toughness is the ability to absorb impact force, using a dot punch hit it with a hammer into the material, the smaller the mark the higher the toughness
What is plasticity
The ability to be deformed, and keep the deformed shape
What is ductility and it’s material test
The ability to be drawn out under pressure, attempt to bend the material in a vice
What is malleability and it’s material test
The ability to withstand cracks whilst compression, clamp material into a vice and bend
What is elasticity
Ability to be deformed and return to its original shape
Types of electrical physical properties
Conductor, insulator
Types of thermal phsycial properties
Conductor, insulator, expansion
What is opaque
You can’t see through it
What is translucent
You can see through it, but it’s blurry
What is transparent
You can see through it
