formal female associatiomn, while women couldn’t directly fight alongside men they helped them campaign and weaved/made their own tea during the boycotts pre-AR
republican motherhood/cult of domesticity
confined social roles for women, they needed to make the house a haven of rest for their husband and do service to the us by having sons that can actually serve the us
first wave of feminism
- fell in the form of supporting other movements, like the populist movement (and earlier, grange movement)
- American Suffrage Association- goal to get women’s suffrage and it was proposed every year but not accepted until 1920 in the 19th amendment
- settlement houses ex. jane addams
- Knights of Labor, one of the first labor unions in 1869, supported equal pay for men and women!
- participation in education, temperance, and abolitionist movements

- flapper womene, changing gender roles, smoking, cursing, drinking alcohol
2nd wave of feminism/era
-started in the 1960s
-women want more than what’s in their house
-women were still frustrated from lack of care so in 1963, betty friedan wrote “the feminine mystique”
challenged many people’s assumption about women’ place in society
after women got the 19th amendment in 1920
founders of NOW, the national organization for women 1966 (and rradical WITCH)
fought over the qual rights amendment(ERA)–> phyllis schlafly complained about it cause it took away privileges of women, did not pass
21st century women’s role
- women now prioritize career over marriage
- women increasingly becoming breadwinners
- hillary clinton’s campaign 2016
- new patterns in family structures-rise in one parent households
