The Land Back Movement was officially founded in 2018 by Aaron Tailfeathers, a member of the Kainai tribe.
The hashtag “LandBack” became popular on native clothing and art.
To give context to the movement, near the end of the 15th century, colonization started in the Americas.
Conflicts and battles, such as the Powhatan Wars, the Chickasaw Wars, and the Indian Removal Act, began because white settlers encroached on the natives’ land.
However, Native Americans resisted through the Pueblo Revolt and the Battle at Little Bighorn.

So, the Land Back Movement is delivering momentous changes to the status of Native Americans by bringing more cultural awareness, recognition of rights, and repatriation of land.
Continued relocation and dispossession throughout history indicate how Native Americans had to continually fight against American assimilation and the erasure of their identities.
The status of Native Americans has evolved and changed from removal and erasure efforts to some recognition of tribal sovereignty and land reclamation.
