Wk 1: bone markings Flashcards
Facet
a smooth surface for articulation
Bottom of femur
Fovea
a small shallow pit in a bone
usually where an articular disc sits or another bone articulates
Fossa
a large, relatively flat region
function to house and protect organs
Bottom of femur
Sulcus/groove
a long shallow depression
functions to house a structure
Top of femur
Foramen
Rounded passageway
a large hole through a relatively flat/thin region of bone that is usually to allow a structure to pass through
Eye ridge
Canal/meatus
a long tunnel like region that provides a passage through a bone
Behind eye
Sinus
a space with a deep opening without an exit
Above eyes
Fissure
a long, open slit in a bone
houses nerves and blood vessels
Inside eye
Trochanter
a large process found usually where a group of muscles attach
found only on the femur
Top of femur
Tuberosity
a large raised bumpy region on a bone often where a very large strong muscle attaches
Middle of femur
Line
a long, slightly raised projection
found where a muscle with a large attachment border originates or inserts
Lining of pelvis
Process
a bony projection
often interchangeable with other similar terms
Cheek bone
Spine
a sharp pointed projection usually a point of muscle and ligament attachment
Point on pelvis
Epicondyle
a small/medium projection found proximal and distal to a condyle, usually associated with a specific joint.
They function usually for muscle and ligament attachment.
Plateau
an articular surface found on the very proximal and distal end of a bone that is usually on the larger side and very flat and smooth allowing for ease of movement
