PERTUSSIS Incubation period
7-10 days exceeding 21 days
PERTUSSIS Period of comunicability
Catarrhal stage- 7 days after exposure to 3 weeks
PERTUSSIS Mode of Transmission
Droplet
Direct contact
PERTUSSIS Susceptibility
One attack– definite and prolonged immunity
PERTUSSIS Stages
I, S
- Invasive/Catarrhal stage
- Spasmodic stage
PERTUSSIS Invasive/Catarrhal stage
7-14 days
F- fever
DC- dry cough
C- coryza
PERTUSSIS Spasmodic stage
4-12 weeks
PC- paroxysmal cough/whooping cough
PoE- protrusion of eyes
L/DV- lymphadenopathy/dilated veins on neck (jugular vein distention)
PERTUSSIS Medical Management:
- Droplet precaution; Cough etiquette (cough mouth when coughing or sneezing)
- Isolation for 3 weeks (highly communicable)
- Avoid use of common towels, glasses and eating utensils
- Abdominal support (abdominal hernia due to paroxysmal cough)
- Clothing contaminated with discharges should be boiled for 30 minutes before laundering
PERTUSSIS Complications:
B- bronchopneumonia
H- hernia (umbilical)
H- hemorrhage (hernia)
PERTUSSIS Prevention
DPT/Penta vaccine
- 6, 10, 14 weeks
