Who was most to blame in the fall of the Constitutional Monarchy? Flashcards
War?
Turned suspicion of King and made vetoes eg re emigres seem despotic
Suspicion of king turned to suspicion of traitor- Austrian Committee
war brought in federes (they helped during Aug 10) and made active citizens part of NG
Middle ground pre-war= plain won Oct 1791 election vs after champ de mars jacobin dominated
King?
He vetoed federe camp which would house 20k men- trying to sabatoge war effort and plan a coup? (federes were there to prevent military coup in paris)
Replaced ministes with more persaudable Feuillants- again they were anti- war so he seems to be hindering war effort
Refused the disbanding of his guard
His guard appeared to celebrate military set backs (eg retreat of troups in April in Lille and killing of officers)
Vetos
Flight to Varenne
Armoire de Fer
380 voted for his death
Not Louis but War?
War put him in a difficult position
He couldnt control certain stuff- didnt ask for Brunswick Manifesto (Aug 1792) or Decl of Pilnitz (July 1791); didnt ask for emigres to go to Austria
His vetoes were constitutional
Did allow some laws to pass eg loss of private security guards to Tuileries
SC and clubs?
Jacobins pushed for execution- l’appel nominal (open ballot)
20th June 1792- 8k armed demonstrators storm tuilerries with petition for king an assembly
Storm again in Aug 10 and succesfully bring king back to paris Temple, he gets suspended
SC mob stop him from going to Saint Cloud on Easter contributing to the FtV
Jacobins asked 48 paris sections for passive citizens to be allowed pikes like active
Not SC but war?
Provoked by federes (militant republcans brought from provinces to Paris; they were a powerful pressure group in Paris creating war patroism and calling for removal of King)- only brought in because of the war
Passive citizens only allowed into NG because of war
National Assembly and legislative Asembly?
Stirred up SCs- gave them pikes, let them into NG, legitimised their attacks
Deputies handed over the king to commune where he was imprisoned in the Commune
Did what the Commune wanted post Aug 10
La Patrie en Danger- 10 July= emergency state
CCotC and stuff put louis in tricky situation
Not assembly but the war?
didnt want to get rid of the king
Had inspired confidence in electorate pre-war to support consittutional monarchy: Oct 1791- Plain won vs post- Champ de Mars Jacobin won
Only gave Sc power due to war
